Vanguard does not have any setup fees if you set up the account on the web. I started back before the internet with mail.
Vanguard starts at 0.05% expense ratio and goes up. The cheap expense rations are some of the funds that everybody tries to beat.
Other companies have some of the same funds with no cost setup fees and low expenses. We just started with Vanguard in the mid 90's and stayed because I could not find any funds that had lower fees that beat Vanguard over the long haul.
