Brasso is misused so often.. it will ruin any plated surface. Not many brass things aren't plated. They will have a coating to prevent tarnish. Once you eat up the plating it will tarnish again weekly.

Best way I've found to clean brass is soak it in a ammonia solution. Say 2 oz ammonia to a gallon water. That will brighten it up but it will also be dull. Then you need to take a polish cloth to it.

For an old doorknob I'd just buy some gold colored spray paint and call it a day

If there's no planting left and you want an original shine then you need a little buff wheel and some rouge. Then clear coat it.
