southern MN
Pay him.

Charges seem very high, I had 40 acres pattern tiled a few years ago including survey and design, locating 5 old mains plus a main and 6 laterals. Was tiled on 80 foot centers, was about $27,000. Every old main they could from the 1950s was reused/ kept in the system, all good concrete.

They found all my mains with 2 guys, 2 probes, a backhoe, and a shovel. The backhoe was sitting most of the single forenoon they used to find everything. Not sure how they used up 22 hours and again more on 20 acres for you, but things might be different there.

Think you would have been ahead to forget the old stuff, and just have a pattern layout put in on the 20 acres, cheaper than the route you ended up with.

In short, I don't think you got the best plan but sounds like not good communications/ plans/ experience, but yea pay them.

Paul
