Allis, I know exactly what you are saying.   I have a couple friends that are 70 yrs old and have started to dig a hole for themselves.....burning through equity.   For one reason or the other, last couple of years have not been good.  Too hot, too cold, too much rain, blah, blah, blah.  And now, low prices going lower.   The sensible thing to do is give up the rented land, farm their own payed for land, and pick up a fun, part time job if needed.  I don't think it will happen however because they believe next year will be better.   "It has to get better because I'm working really hard."



If they are debt free,pay reasonable rents and buy crop mkt. price ins. I would think it would be very hard to burn much equity. Paid for land even after taxes gives you at least $1 bu. start over renter and probably $2 bu. over guy trying to pay for farm
