Subject: J.D. Maximerge: Advice for a rookie buyer

Looking to purchase a secondhand J.D. maximerge planter, either 8 row or 12 row on 40 inch spacing. I will use it for corn, milo and maybe beans. I have never owned one before and don`t want to go overboard on price. I am kinda old school and prefer a durable, bulletproof, simple, more mechanical type set-up, so looking for advice on what to get. Please excuse the dumb questions! I farm heavy Gumbo type soils and mainly No-Til.

Chain drive or pro drive?, Vacuum or finger pick-up, shark tooth row cleaners? Conservation furrowers? Solid or steel toothed closing wheels?

How do you control plant populations without getting into computer systems. Is there some sort of mechanical system as an option?

I have been told that for No-til situations XP units are more durable and accurate than Plus. What are peoples opinions on that?

What about frames. Is there a choice? If so which are the ones to get for strength and durability? and 3pt or trailing?

Thanks and sorry for the head spin.
