I didn't think about them until relatives started falling, having stoves catch afire, drive off the road, etc....
Its a simple fact that if our rural area didn't have them, lots of folks would die earlier.
I go to a lot of municipal surplus auctions. I buy all the good non-expired turnout gear/boots I see and donate them to different volunteer fire departments. Lot of those volunteers can't afford the new stuff.
I also call in if I'm going to burn big brush piles so they don't have to come out if they get called by some stupid neighbor.
