NC Kansas | We've not had any problems but are also kinda careful around our neighbors. So far our practice is to hopefully kill a good first flush of volunteer then seed a blend around Aug 1st. Our blends always contain oats, millet, sudan grass, peas, sunflower, radish. If you get a good stand the volunteer wheat really is suppressed. Don't skimp on seed. Just from what I've observed if you want to get good cover/tonnage to graze and have a decent mix of species you'll have to spend $25/ac minimum. Not sure what your cow hay situation is but you will be impressed with how well the cows do on it and how much hay you save. For us the hay savings offsets a lot of the seed cost. Not to mention the labor... Cows feed themselves for 45-60 days especially if you have any stalks to graze too. | |
