Can't totally speak to the necessity but do think as others have said it may not be the area to skimp if you are making a large investment in underground pipe. We have 4 at high points in a 15" line that runs about 9,900 ft to a reservoir - we pump up to 2,500 gal/ minute thru it with an elevation change of about 50'. We have another 12" line that also runs about 9,900 ft on flatter ground where we only have 2 vents. Systems were designed by the irrigation co. I however, share your concern about farming around them - we have painted them red and have posts around some so equipment keeps its distance but sooner or later one is likely to get hit and it will not be a real easy fix when the vent is broken off.
