Subject: 1980's school lunch

I remember many years ago when we could could pick up large chunks of cheese from USDA.

I was just telling my kids about this. The school got alot of stuff for free. We always had a table out by the seating area with USDA raisins and peanuts. Honey and butter too most days. I wonder if milk was partially subsidised too for the schools. We could drink all the white milk we wanted, but chocolate was rationed. We had grilled cheese sandwiches at school one day every week. Pizza burgers were pretty common too.

My mom would come home with cheese and peanuts from the commodity center. I don't know how they verified family size. I Think this went on until the 1985 farm bill expired. I helped a beekeeper deliver honey to a USDA warehouse in 1993 yet.

Whatever went on with the chickens and bread give away seems more like a local agency thing maybe? Seems odd that they are in brand name packages. The stuff from the 80's was in USDA packaging. I still
have some empty peanut cans around.
