I would have to disagree. It is more a timing thing. Those who bought just before the recent huge run up in prices could pay off the land in a few years. They bought the land just before the run up in commodities and made good money for the last several years and had reasonable land payments. Those who bought in the later stages of the run up paid more for land and now are facing depressed commodity prices and high land payments. A couple of years can make a completely different outcome. There were periods in the past like this before and probably always will be. A combination of luck at timing and opportunity make or break plans.
Edit to add: I agree that it was just as hard before. I meant that I think that depending on luck a guy could still have paid off land in a few years in this last couple of years also.
