As far as a variable speed PTO, I believe some of the early Fords with Select-O-Speed had a position where the PTO was connected through the transmission. In this position, the PTO speed changed based on the gear selected. I suppose there were applications for this but none that I was familiar with.
I used a White 2-62 that had that also. I wondered too what implement would need that function.
