Eastern Iowa | I have no-till corn for 4 years into green live cover and it has worked very well. I let the cover crop grow until the day I plant because around here you do not get enough growth out of it killing it 10 days before. This spring I no-tilled conventional CORN ON CORN (4yrs) into 12inch tall rye and grew 215 bu/corn. Here is what I have learned planting cover crops and no-tilling into them when they are GREEN.
-Run insecticide
-Have good trash whippers, I have tried yetters, dawns, kinze, and martins- I have had best luck with just the fixed martins.
-Spiked closing wheels work good if you want to clean them every time you put seed in planter
-Lead coulters cannot replace new double disc openers (replace often)
-Starter/ Pop-up fertilizer is a must, I run 8 gals pop-up and 275# dry with planter
-I apply 30 units N with pre-plant herbicide the day I plant ( very important for green matter breakdown), 50 units with planter, and sidedress 80 units around V9.
-I can get into the field a day earlier with the green cover crop because of it's moisture consumption
This is what I have learned take it or leave it.
Thanks
