Southeast WI | The UW had some interesting info on fert levels this fall (presented at an update meeting). The data shows that you need to have somewhat adequate levels of both P and K otherwise you can see a deficiency in both. Pretty much what you said - P defic early and then K defic later on in summer even though your K is adequate. So if the plant is stressed already from low P it can't take up adequate K later on. A hundred pounds or so of starter goes a long way to making up for low testing soils, no question about it.
And I just looked at a thread started by Matt Hintz a few minutes ago - guys there claim the exact opposite of what you are saying. Truth is at adequate plus fertility levels starter will likely only help in years that are short on heat units. But if you have low/defic P/K levels starter is likely to help every year and some years 20-30 bpa more. | |
