Central Missouri
The reason gold as opposed to corn or say iron is used as a type of money is because of its inherent qualities that it possesses best compared to all other substances.

It is dense
It is rare but not too rare
It takes quite a few dollars to mine an ounce
It is virtually indestructible
It stores well and doesn't take up too much space
It is malleable
It is divisible
It can't be reproduced by man

Those are just some but unique qualities that man needed 5k years ago to trade in across regions and cultures. Gold fit the bill.
