Subject: RE: Tillage in semi frozen ground

Mid Michigan
I did some chisel plowing several years ago on some bean stubble ground that had some combine ruts and was pretty wet. I got rained out before I got finished that day and it was the end of the year. In the spring when I hit this ground with a disk the chisel plowed ground was as rough and dry as a cob and the part of the field I couldn't finish worked up perfectly and mellow. I made up my mind right there that chisel plowing in the fall isn't always the best plan for us. I'm really starting to believe that on our ground less is better when it comes to tillage. Oh, and watching my 80 year old neighbor no till and get all his stuff planted so fast and having great crops was another one of those lightbulb moments.
