Several months ago there was an article in the news feed about sweet potatoes, not a single variety has ever been found in current use or in samples from South American burial items that doesn't have a portion of DNA from a non-plant source (virus, protozoa, invertebrate, do not remember exact source).

To summarize, sometime before and/or during the domestication process 1,000s of years ago, the sweet potato genome was modified by the exact same organism used to modify genomes today. This was horizontal gene transfer identical to the process used to produce GMO's that occurred in nature. Therefore, sweet potatoes are naturally occurring GMO's
