Residue breakdown takes time, temperature, and moisture. If you've ever combined half a field of corn and then waited to finish the field for a couple weeks the difference in residue breakdown can be seen throughout the next year. If you want to spend a few $$$ to increase residue breakdown spend it on LP in order to combine earlier.
