NE Iowa | My guess is the difference you are seeing between you and the neighbors is population related and not row spacing. I'm not too far from you and I had more down corn this year also. Ours was from a storm in mid September. I kept upping my population slowly over the years. I'd see studies where the max yield would occur between 32-34K. Well between the no-till, cover-crop, manure, and turkeys eating seed I thought I needed to overshoot that with the planting pop to get that stand. I was dropping 37-37.5K per acre. Cheap ~$100/ bag conventional seed also helped make this high planting rate feasible $$$ wise. Well this year I think every seed came up. We had plenty of moisture until end of June and then the faucet shut off. July and August were way below normal precip and the corn had to cannibalize the stalk to keep the ear it had started when we had moisture. So looking forward I will be backing off my planting pop 4-5K for next year. | |
