Subject: chimney rebuild

trying to rebuild sons chimney on his house. old concrete block just died of old age. going to mortar blocks as required to get to old height. pouring a cap on garage floor to bridge between block and 6 inch square clay tile ,,,inside liner,,, then a metal cap on top of that to keep rain out

my question is mortaring clay tile liner to the one below it,,,its going to be the top most clay tile. Do I use regular mortar or fireplace silicone

and any other tips for getting the cap up a tall ladder and across the roof without cracking it?? its going to be 21" square with a square 8" hole in center for clay tile to set inside

thanks for ANY help cause never did it before
