I would suggest that you do your own research by reading travel books, as suggested, and also like you have done here-asking for advice. Everyone has different interests and ideas, sort thru them, and what you want to do, and go from there. Driving a rental car on the outer islands isn't bad at all. We used to rent a car and drive around Honolulu and Oahu, was a lot younger and more foolish then. 7-10 days, one island, two at the most. 14 days = two islands.
As it turns out, my wife and I found the Big Island to suit us the best for various reasons, lots of other people prefer Maui or Kauai.
