West Texas | Many soils, especially in west Texas, have huge colonies of termites that are usually invisible. Often, after a rain, females will leave the colony, and seek new ground to colonize. Most of the swarm you see are males attempting to mate with the new queens. All the males will die within a few hours, and the newly fertilized queen will dig into whatever site she thinks will make a successful colony.
Hopefully, the new colony is underground, and not in your home.
Despite their reputation, termites do a valuable service by breaking down woody trash and plant debris, and converting it into a nutrient-dense byproduct, termite poop. At least, we don't have to haul their manure out, so that's something, I guess. | |
