There is a lot of data that 1/3 of N banded, either in a strip ahead of planting or with the planter, in the spring along with 2/3 N side dressed is the most cost effective means of applying N to corn. There are folks using 0.8 lb N/bu of corn with this split application system. Some are able to use even less. If you like nh3 use dry or liquid for the 1/3 in the spring and nh3 for the side dress.
actually kinda like that plan jim, and if the powers that be decide that, against all data indicating otherwise, fall nh3 has to go then this is probably the direction we will go. the infrastructure does not exist to handle all the nitrogen applications preplant, or sidedress. the season has to be split up somehow.
