Subject: RE: 4-H Plowing Club??? I'm not sure whether to be angry or sad

Ripley, Ontario Canada
The goal of the plowing club is to teach kids how to use a plow properly, it is a very valuable tool if you know how to use it. A good plowing job should take 1 pass with a field cultivator and have a perfectly level flat field. Here it would also be ready to plant. If I don't plow, my ground never drys out, it just gets hard. I have the heavy wet clay, and a short growing season. I did notill some beans this year into cornstalks and the ground was still wet and cold in the middle of June, if I waited that long to plant corn, I would never have a crop, we have to plant early may and hope we get the corn to blacklayer and be 30% moisture, anything dryer is a bonus. Under 25 is rare, and I have only combined corn in the fall once with a moisture in the teens.

Just a different world we farm in.
