Below are some three year average yields from a population trial we did a few years ago.
160,000 49.2
180,000 50.4
200,000 51.4

Here is 2014 only population trial (high yielding year, everything good)
175000 65.97
160000 67.54
180000 65.03
200000 63.44
220000 63.50
175000 65.13

2013 population trial (typical yields for this area. average year)
120 56.12
140 57.36
160 58.39
180 59.29
200 60.37
220 57.88
160 56.5

2012 population trial (below average year, dry)
125K POP 43.48 150K POP 44.35
150K POP 44.35 125K POP 43.48
175K POP 41.99 225K POP 42.98
200K POP 42.19 200K POP 42.19
225K POP 42.98 175K POP 41.99

We target drop 165k to 175k in tilled fields and 170k to 180k in no-till fields. This is for dryland in southeastern Nebraska. For our area these are the populations we have chosen. In different areas of the Midwest I believe you can go lower given the right soils and moisture.

This years population trials range from 100k to 240k in 15" rows.
