One thing that happens in the smaller specialty market, as you are finding out, is quality rejection. I think that most places have some very high "standards" for the beans. When they are running short, they will take most anything and call it good. When supplies are plentiful, the "standard" is trotted out and massive discount or rejection of product happens. My personal experience is with dry edible beans, barley, and spring wheat. Have not grown dry edible beans and barley for years because for too many years the "discounts" off of there self enforced "standard" was out of hand whenever a bumper crop came along. And spring wheat, it is amazing what they test for when they do not need it, but do not test for when supplies are tight.

One neighbor had loads of food soys rejected because the beans were to small. The "standard" was for a larger bean, and his fell right through the screens.
