Subject: RE: Beginner strip till question

East central Iowa, Camanche, Iowa
Read my post below.
I use a six row bar with Yetter Maverick units with a mole knife that I put 60 -80 units liquid nitrogen down about 8". I end up with a ~8x8 strip of mellow dirt that I plant into with a 6 row 7200 deere with floating Martin cleaners and spike closers. I also put down 3-6 gal of 6-24-6-1 in furrow and 60-80 units of N with 3 gal of KTS 3" off the row with JD single disc coulters. The balance of my N is Dry AMS spread in early spring.

The row units have shark tooth row cleaners that I set semi aggressive as I do not want the rows too clean because the planter row cleaners will finish the job. My tractor wheels mash two rows and the center row is left standing giving me my mark. The closers are set to give me a small berm as I am spring strip tilling and do not have the time to allow a high berm to settle. I like to have a rain after to get my strips to settle a bit and mellow .

I find I have to raise my planter row units because the strips are more mellow that my no till bean stubble. Emergence is incredible and yields for my coc are comparable to cob. last year my coc beat my cob by ~5bpa. I have a theory as to why based on fertilizer placement and the carbon to nitrogen ratio in strip till coc to conventional till coc.
