It has everything to do with soil type.  Here 60ft gives you 6 ft of drained ground.  Completely useless.  50ft isn't really any better.  I'd say that most everything done around here in the last 20 years is 3" at 35 ft. some down to 25' but not whole fields.  Most all the 50' is getting split.
