Central Illinois | I know that a lot of these barns are too far gone to bring back, but it kills me to see old barns falling in disrepair, then torn down. We just put new exterior boards on our old barn. Unfortunately it is not the barn we wish we had saved. Our family homesteaded our place in the early 19th century and the large bank barn that we wish we still had was tore down when I was 2 back in the early 80's. I remember going in with my grandfather to get a rope off a wall. At the time it was in good shape but needed a roof and being that my grandfather and father just saw it as an old barn they tore it down. Luckily the smaller barn down the road at a second family home site was not in need at the time so it was left. Now 35 years later, my dad regrets taking down our old bank barn, which is why we spent money and time on our other smaller barn. It was 3 stories high. We have talked about trying to rebuild it but it would be so much more expensive and never have the character. | |
