After 3 years with 60:40 urea ESN we're going back to sidedressing. ESN has a few drawbacks.
1. most expensive source of N
2. floats so when you get the pounding spring rains and water ponds and moves that ESN goes with it.
3. We observed late N deficiency in 2 of 3 years. These were both wet years.
4. less flexibility for fine tuning N applications. IE nitrogen testing before application in crop.
Do you just spread N an leave it on top?
Yes ESN is more expensive but if you come back with a second pass to sidedress does that pass come at no cost? When putting down my urea I put my ESN at the same time so cost of 1 pass not 2 saves to help offset the difference in cost. Also put a good portion of P and K down at same time leaving just a 100# of fert to be put on with my planter speeding up my planting not having to fill so often when planting. I work that in lightly with cultivator then plant. I have been happy with results, but I am a small operation and work alone
