Subject: RE: Basis on new crop corn...

Leesburg, Ohio
Sat, that may be true where you are, but definitely not here in S Ohio. There are almost always opportunities for better basis with on-farm storage. We are normally -20 to -40 in the fall. Just storing until December is the greatest gain, normally we can pick up 30 to 45 cents.

Contracting ahead is a great thing and everyone should sell a portion of the crop ahead. But selling for fall delivery negates much of the advantage. If we had to haul everything to town during harvest, we never would get done before spring. And we would miss the biggest, most consistent basis play of the year by not being able to even make it into Dec delivery.

Also not to mention the lower shrink factor and much cheaper drying costs we achieve by doing our own drying. Yes, corn is going to shrink no matter whose bin it is in. But most elevators here have shrink factors and drying rates that are way more than what it really costs.

Bottom line, anyone who thinks they are money ahead to not have any drying or storage on the farm, maybe needs to re-think their plan, at least in this neck of the woods.
