I do the exact things you are talking about with our Cat. During planting I use the tanks to carry extra fertilizer. For side dressing I put 28 in them. The pump is mounted on the tractor so we only need to have one of them for both operations.
It works well, but berming is a bit of an issue but not much. We have 12 row equipment.
I also put 28 in the tanks for extra weight to go tiling with it.
