East central Iowa, Camanche, Iowa | Here is my thought. The propane comes out of the tank under tank pressure via a liquid manifold in the bottom of the tank. Why couldn't you depressurize the tank and just fill with diesel venting the tank as you are filling. Once full, pressurize the tank with air and push the diesel out the liquid line?
Depending on the line size it may take a long time to fill.
I used to load rail cars that had once been pressurized tanks for LPG with a light oil type byproduct. The tanks had vapor valves and liquid valves. We loaded the car with the liquid valve while venting the car with the vapor valve. Once the car reached it's destination they pressured up the car with the vapor valve and pushed the liquid out the car through the liquid valve.......
Not sure why you could not do the same thing with your tank. Valve and line size will be your limiting factor. Also your level gauge should work as it will float in diesel just as well as propane.
Worth a try............
