Here in NW Illinois with Com Ed as our provider you want the house and farm on the same service otherwise you pay commercial plus a demand charge for farm usage.
600 amp is not much more then 400 amp when all is said and done.
Also contact your electrical power supplier before doing anything. They may require a different disconnect, etc then what you might be wanting to put in.
