Subject: RE: test weights and moisture bs

Midwest
test weight is about the bulk density of the kernel. The 56 lb. for corn and 60 lb. for beans is just the standard used for pricing. If we adjusted standard test weights then price would be adjusted accordingly. It is the moisture game of blending, having drying charges when the processor does not dry, not being paid for the dry matter content in overly dry grain. All this would go away if grain was sold by dry matter instead of air dry. Most animal rations do make this adjustment for moisture when balancing rations, Most export elevators blend for adjusting moisture. They discount for the moisture difference, probably to for some of the "handling costs' but also makes for a nice internal profit center in their business.
