Sandy Hook, MB | Hello GREEN FARMER
I have taken 2nd & the occasional 3rd cut (rare in these parts) after a killing frost. Those swaths sat there for 2 to 3 weeks before they were dry enough for baling & would often get rained on. It was still real good quality feed according to the feed tests. The thing is that the hay does not spoil laying in the swath that long in late Sept./early Oct. when it is cool out like it does in the heat of summer.
I'm in the same boat as you, I can't chop my barley/pea silage field because now after being too dry, it won't quit raining. It's raining almost every second day here & field is too wet to travel on. It's under seeded to clover & don't want to make a mess of the field & then have ruts to deal with for the next 2 years. Oh well, have to keep busy working in the shop from keeping from pulling my hair out!!! Could be tough to winter cattle without any feed. |
