N. Indiana | In the past railroads mostly used their own power, but with transcontinental intermodal, and coal and oil trains going from out west to east coast, it is easier to keep the original power on and just charge other railroad fees for using it. As far as mileage goes there are short pools and long pools. I work out of 3 different terminals and we have 130 mile short pools all the way to 290 mile long pools. Out west they probably have some longer ones but not by much because the train still has to make it in 12 hours. Ricky covered how the engines are connected, and I will second ekeller by saying you did the right thing not getting involved with the RR if you value family. As far as passengers we used to occasionally give rides to family and friends, it was not allowed but you could usually get away with it. I wouldn't dream of it now because of the new discipline dominated environment we work in. I have however had several run ins with hobos riding over the years. Very interesting.
