Farmers without there own trucks often find it more convenient to sell fob corn and not have to deal with scheduling both the delivery and the truck. Sometimes there is more flexibility in delivery with the elevator because if you need to deliver sooner you can do that and elevator just holds there in house stuff back a bit. If the end user is all covered in the spot market the elevator may have uncovered sales into the plant that let's them keep buying. The elevator may have also shorted basis when the basis was better and now can offer a better bid than the plant is currently paying. It also sometimes the case that you have more confidence in the elevator to perform than you do in the end user.
