I doubt it would cost much more to get real seed. But birdfood would grow if it isn't all ground up, just won't make a head.
Birdfood from a store should work just fine.
Hybrid Sunflower seed is well over $200-$300 + per bag. Bidfood, should be maybe $20. per 50 lb. bag.
Current oilseed bid prices are currently under $20 per cwt.
