Douglass Kansas | The lastest we have planted is the 22nd of July and they made around 1700 lbs which is the best we have ever done. These are oilseed and I plant around 21000. The first of August would be the lasted I would plant them. They can be very hard to get a good stand in hot weather as they are slower about getting a root on them when compared to milo or soybeans. We always plant ours as double crop after wheat on our poorer ground. They can handle heat and dry weather very well once they come up. We put on 15 gallon of 28% at planting time. Our yield goal is 1200 lbs. Blackbirds can take a good crop in just a few days. Deer can eat the tops off of them when they are small and the plant will not form a good head if it even does head out. So if deer are a problem with soybeans or birds a problem with milo I would not plant sunflowers there. We have gone to planting ours in 15" rows as sometimes they do not cover the row very well on 30" spacing. | |
