Eastern Iowa | My rule of thumb used to be that it took about $400 over the course of the year to feed a cow ($1.10/day) up here in Iowa, but I never thought about that much. It's probably more than that once I start putting a pencil to it. So I stopped.
For example, I use roughly 210 days of hay, and always figure 3.25 large rounds per cow (1600 pound bales) to make it through the winter. At $100/ton that's $260 right there for winter hay. Still have to pay somebody rent for grass the other 5 months a year (even if it is myself) plus supplement/mineral, overhead, and return to management. | |
