Anything six months and older take far too much bedding in a pen pack barn to keep them clean and dry. Freestalls work better for these heifers. We bed our heifer freestalls with pen pack cleanout (compost), but you must realize that we keep our pack pens bedded well so the cleanout is drier than wet sawdust.
