Subject: RE: Drilling vs Planting Soybeans (again)

SE Iowa
I used to drill and beans were great to combine but seed placement is way better with a planter both in spacing and in depth control so I save seed with the planter by planting less pop. Also found it harder to set pop with the drill. My best yields ever were drilled, 72 bu/ acre avg one year and have never come close since. But now we have cyst and sudden death etc to contend with. I have dropped pops from 200,000 to 160,000 to 140,000 in last 12 years. Because of wet springs almost every year I am going back to 160,000. Rowed beans help each other crack the soil quite a bit better then drilled if soil gets crusted over. Studies I have read said most ideal spacing is 19 inches.
