Lancaster, OH | Take this from a guy who has worked with farmers for 33 years but doesn't farm.
I believe a planter is best, year in and year out. Stands have been better due to better placement. With having consistent placement, I also see more even and synchronized emergence. With drills, I see days and even a week or more in emergence with nearly adjacent plants. I have had fewer replants where planters are used compared to drills.
I would give a big ++ to the comments that the choice between a drill or planter pales in comparison to other management practices and their effect on final yields. First, I believe there has been more yield unrealized due to fertility (nitrogen, potassium, manganese) and delayed control of emerged weeds than any other practice. | |
