We're in a pretty safe area, I guess, but there are some much less safe areas too, some down here and some up in the north. It just depends where you are and who runs your province or municipality. Although, I think much of the news makes it sound worse than it actually is. Where I live, kids safely ride their bikes to school and my truck stands outside with its keys in it most nights. Less than an hour's drive from me there are places I wouldn't even walk down the street in the daytime, but that's in the city.
