North Texas Panhandle Dumas Texas | Depends on conditions. If crop is following a low residue or on fallow ground over 100 lbs N is probably to much but after a crop with a lot of residue where the C:N ratio is hi would not be that much of a problem. Most of the growers whose fields I check don't put any N out pre-plant except maybe for what rides along in other fertilizer applications. Excess Nitrate N signals a plant to grow vegetatively whereas ammonium N signals reproductive growth. Corn is not as sensitive as crops like cotton and sugar beets, but it still makes a difference It is hard to maintain a N fertilizer in the ammonium form. Any form of N applied to early will be in the nitrate form by the time for crop use and plants will use nitrate N first as it moves easier with soil water. |
