Subject: RE: Power from battery

Frame grounding and fusing are two important parts of the setup. On Cat equipment we had a problem where the operator would turn off the master switch and then our system became the "ground for the starter. Needles to say it was gone by the time the master switch was turned on. Simple to fix and stops the problem. Another issue on this subject for those running 24v systems:make sure to run a voltage reducer rather than just hooking to one battery. It doesn't take long and you will be buying a pair of batteries.
On the voltage issue, we were told that our GPS units (Ashtech at the time) only needed 10v to work. After seeing what we though was loss of accuracy and loss of lock on the rover of a RTK system. We finally set up a test unit to see how different voltages would affect these problems. We found that at about 12.4v we saw a reduction in accuracy and an apparent loss of processing power. After that we checked the RTK base and saw a similar effect.
I cannot say that Deere, Trimble, or others have the same issue, but when you are looking for the accuracy that we needed for elevation control, it was important,
