If you're getting smear in the trench, are you sure it's dry enough to be planting?
I don't mean to debate your primary point, there are soils and conditions for which no-till does do better without coulters, but in the soil types I'm familiar with, trench smear has always seemed to correlate directly with moisture conditions, and correlate less so with coulter choices.
