Is a chopping corn head beneficial in a no-till system?

garvo - 12/16/2012 19:23 we use to run a old jd haead that left the stalks long-it worked better no-tiill behind that then anything else-except when we ran a open roll ear corn picker-them stalks I think got longer-sometimes it still looked like unharvested corn-we run coulters -the trash whippers make the field ruff!


For no-till, the longer and intact a guy and leave the stalk/leaves, the less trash on the soil surface to contend with . . .  .
Incorperating heavy residue into the top 2 or 3 inchs of the soil profile isn't the best enviroment for seed to germ either ~
There are several ways to deal with the stalks after planting/germ . . . .
