Subject: RE: Organic Matter Going Down In No-Till

central - east central Minnesota -

shanesus - 12/4/2012 23:37 We've been no-tilling/strip-tilling for 12 years and have been using a ton of poultry manure on corn stalks and 2-3 tons of poultry manure on bean stubble. We got the results back from our grid sampling and our organic matter has gone down about 0.5% - 0.75% from 5 years ago. The soil test was taken using a 6 inch core and by the same company as previous years. The moisture was perfect for the tests as well. I've talked to some other area no-tillers seeing the same thing. Does anyone have an explanation? TIA

Yes, more info is needed. Would like to compare the complete soil test from 5yrs ago to the complete soil test today.
Do you take residue off fields?
As others have pointed out, soil tests are a tool and 5 yrs between testing is a bit long, as others have pointed out, labs could easily change testing proceedures during that time. Could be more accurate now, then in the past.
