Subject: RE: DOT or not. Crossing into SD

central - east central Minnesota -

Sheep Herder - 11/27/2012 08:16

Bought a semi a couple weeks ago with a grain hopper.  I live 2 miles into ND from the SD border and will probably be hauling at least some and maybe a lot of my grain 35 miles into SD.  I know that LEGALLY I need a DOT number, but when I talked to SD truck regulatory, the guy said for those few miles he didn't think it was worth the hassle.   He figured worst case senerio, I'd be told to get one if I made a lot of trips.  His exact words were "That's a federal thing and we try not to get involved".

My past experience with SD on truck issues that they are full time jerks on most issues, so this makes me leary.   There will be no commercial hauling and I'd be the only driver.

I'd like to avoid the yearly paperwork that comes with a DOT number.

Well . ..    what have you got to loose ?
Give it a whirl and go tell you are "told" get the number or else  . . . . ..
Play dumb farmer and maybe have a filled out copy you can carry around and change the date seasonally to show them you are applying ?
The worst thing that can happen, you acturally have to get one and keep it current
